What are differences among High-temperature Charcoal, Med-temperature Charcoal and Low-temperature Charcoal?

 

High-temperature charcoal, med-temperature charcoal and low-temperature charcoal are not the names or groups of charcoal. Charcoal is divided into these three kinds according to the temperature in carbonization furnace.

 

Why do people use carbonization temperature to distinguish charcoal quality? As we all know, the charcoal will have various quality and features by using various raw materials. For example, charcoal made by tungsten steel wood is better than made by beech and charcoal made by beech is better than made by fruitwood. Charcoal will have different physical and chemical reactions at different carbonization temperatures.

1.      High temperature charcoal.

High temperature charcoal refers to charcoal made at 1000 carbonization temperature and the fixed carbon content reaches more than 85%. Some common charcoal like binchotan, high temperature machine-made charcoal, high temperature bamboo charcoal all belong to high temperature charcoal.

Carbon elements will occur graphitization reaction at above 1000 temperature, which results that non-conducting charcoal will become the conductor and the appearance also will change. It will become the material with metallic luster and high hardness and the sound also turns to silvery metal sound. When knocking, it will have beautiful voice. High temperature charcoal has differences with med-temperature charcoal and low-temperature charcoal no matter in appearance, color or sound when knocking. It is very easy to distinguish.

2.      Med-temperature charcoal.

Medium temperature charcoal refers to the charcoal made at carbonization temperature below 1000 and above 380 and the fixed carbon content is more than 75%. From outside and look, medium temperature charcoal and low temperature carbon have no difference, but if take them in hand contrast, it is easy to distinguish. Medium temperature charcoal is heavier than low temperature charcoal. That is to say the density of same volume medium temperature carbon is higher than low temperature charcoal. This is the biggest difference between these two kinds. Medium temperature charcoal is mainly used in barbecue industry.

The common charcoal in the market like jujube charcoal, litchi and longan charcoal and carbonization fruit charcoal all belong to medium temperature charcoal. Medium temperature machine-made charcoal is also the common medium temperature charcoal. It is tested that the average burning temperature of medium temperature charcoal is longer than low temperature charcoal and combustion calorific value is much higher than low temperature charcoal. This shows carbonization temperature will directly influence the charcoal fixed carbon content and calorific value. Medium temperature charcoal is the sales mainstream products in domestic market due to its short carbonization time and the moderate price.

 

3.      Low-temperature charcoal

            Low temperature carbon refers to the charcoal made at carbonization temperature 380 or so and the fixed carbon content is more than 60%. The common low temperature charcoal includes all kinds of miscellaneous charcoal, industrial charcoal, low temperature machine-made charcoal, etc. This kind of charcoal's appearance doesn't have metal luster like high temperature charcoal. They also do not have the dense feeling like medium temperature charcoal and hardness is low. The sound when knocked is depressing "boom" sound.

      The materials of low temperature charcoal are more miscellaneous. In addition to general wood, it also includes old beams, old furniture, old doors and windows and waste wood. because of this, the price of low temperature charcoal is lower. Low temperature machine-made charcoal's raw materials commonly use wood sawdust adding into a percentage of peanut shell, straw, cob and agricultural wastes. It has low carbon content, low heating value and high ash content, so it is mainly used as heating fuel.
