Categories of Charcoal

Charcoal products can be mainly grouped into white charcoal, black charcoal, activated charcoal and mechanical charcoal. Here are the brief introductions about these four kinds of charcoal:

1. White Charcoal

White charcoal uses fagaceae and ulmaceae in hard broadleaf wood as raw material.
It can be divided into three groups: quercus phillyraeoides, cyclobalanopsis glauca and white charcoal (other oaks and zelkova serrate trees). White charcoal is widely distributed in Zhejiang, Hunan, Fujian, Shanxi, Hubei, Henan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Shandong province. Because of the national environmental protection policies, this industry has been less and less.
The advantages of white charcoal are: long combustion time, smokeless, pollution-free and high proportion. It has metal steel sound when knocked. But it is easy to explode in wet condition and the price is very high.

 2.    Black Charcoal

Black charcoal uses soft board-leaved firewood as raw material. It also has three kinds: expensive teaism charcoal, branch charcoal and cheap civil use charcoal. The first two kinds are mainly spread in the three provinces in northeast; other cheap charcoal is used in Anhui, Zhejiang and Henan provinces.

It is inflammable, but it is explosive and produces much smoke when burning.

3.    Activated Charcoal

Activated Carbon is made using charcoal by activating, rinsing, drying and crushing zinc chloride, phosphoric acid, potassium sulfide and dolomite and other chemicals. The production process may cause serious water pollution, so it is limited by the national government.

Types and Applications of Activated Carbon

Activated carbons are widely used in many areas because of the high surface area, high micropore volume and the functional groups on the surface.
There are many kinds of activated carbons. According to the different raw materials, they can be divided into raw carbon, carbon coal, oil carbon, bone charcoal and blood charcoal, etc. According to making method, they can be divided into physical activation carbon, chemical activation carbon, etc.

According to the appearance, they can be divided into powdered activated carbon, amorphous granular activated carbon and ball shape carbon, etc.
Activated carbon has adsorption property and catalytic property. It is water-fast and has stability in physical and chemical. So the application of activated carbon is very wide.
At present, activated carbon is mainly used in glucose, medicine and monosodium glutamate.

The Powder Activated Carbon Proportion Used in Every Field in China

Medicine: about 59.8%
Oral Glucose: about 26.6%
Food: about 10.8%
Other Fields: about 2.8%
The Proportion of Granular Activated Carbon in China
Synthetic Fiber Carrier: about 51.2%
PVC Carrier: about 13.0%
Purification of Air and Water: about 23.5%
Desulfurization: about 7.7%
Others: about 4.6%

4.   Machine-made charcoal

Machine-made charcoal uses wood dust as raw material.
Firstly, wood dust is pressed by the machine at high temperature and high pressure. Then wood dust is carbonized in the carbonization furnace. In the production process, it doesn’t need to add any binders, so it is environmental-friendly. Machine-made charcoal is a substitute of traditional charcoal.
Compared with black charcoal and white charcoal, machine-made charcoal has many competitive advantages of machine-made charcoal:

1. The price is very cheap and the burning time is longer.

2. It is pollution-free and has high heat value.

3. It has less dust and fixed shape, so it is very convenient to transport and store.
